Russian Officers and Men
Dated 1887, watercolour and pencil with touches of white
Watercolour and pencil with touches of white on paper, 42 x 35 cm.
Piotr Ivanovich Balashov entered the Imperial Academy in 1852, where he studied under S. M. Vorobiov. He enjoyed some success for his views of landmarks around St. Petersburg, and for a series of lithographs of views of Varlaam published in 1863. He spent the last years of his life working in the drawing department of the Ministry of War, where he presumably replaced Karl Piratsky, whose precise, photographic style he successfully emulates.
