Rare Books, Maps & Manuscripts

Some of the highlights in our upcoming auction are: A few fine works by the famous English naturalist and painter James Sowerby, amongst others the important and rare work on minerals, British Mineralogy and Exotic mineralogy with more than 700 beautiful plates, and his colour theory A new elucidation of colours(1809).

The Swedish author August Strindberg has a section of his own with many first editions in nice condition including his extremely rare work Marodörer (1886 - one of only five known copies), from the collection of the Swedish politician Oscar von Sydow (1873-1936).

There are several interesting illustrated works, for example Jean Mallat's rarely seen work on the Philippines,China in a Series of Views by Thomas Allom (1843), Kaempfer's History of Japan in two volumes, published in London 1727 and Balduin Möllhausen, Tagebuch einer Reise von Mississippi from 1858.

The catalogue also includes many interesting maps and atlases. Ortelius' early map of Iceland, a few fine world maps, amongst others Blaeu's decorative World map, Nova totius terrarum orbis geographica, together with the four continents, and Danckert's interesting map on America with New York, titled Novi Belgii novae que Angliae, Amsterdam about 1684. Worth mentioning is also Robert de Vaugondy's Atlas Universel complete with 108 maps, Paris 1757-58.

Notable are also works illustrating fishes with fine plates by Bloch, von Wright, Sundman and Vogt. In the photograph section you will find the Swedish photographer Axel Lindahl who is present with an interesting album from Norway in good condition together with the charming album "Norwegian Costumes".
