Unique painting by the danish artist Dahn Vo at Lauritz.com

Dahn Vo, Composition

Composition, by Danh Vo (b. 1975 in Phu Quoc, Vietnam). Oil on canvas (10 paintings, each painting 40 x 40 cm). c. 2000-2001. Unsigned. Total dimensions: 400 x 80 cm. The work is accompanied by the original paper bag as well assorted empty stretchers.

Danh Vo trained at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, Copenhagen, Denmark and Städelschule, Frankfurt am Main, Germany.

Danh Vo came to Denmark with his family as a 4-year-old after being picked up by a Danish-owned ship in the Pacific. The family were fleeing from a refugee camp in Vietnam in a boat his father had built himself. The family had hoped to come to the USA, but chance would have it that they would end up in Denmark, where they were given citizenship. In his conceptual practice the Vietnamese-born artist Danh Vo addresses, in particular, questions about how identity is formed in relation to cultural and political situations.

The lot comprises 10 oil paintings, each measuring 40 x 40 cm, produced in the years 2000-2001 while Danh Vo studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen. At the beginning of his career, the artist concentrated on painting as a medium, an interest that in recent years however has led him to a more concept-oriented art form. The 10 paintings can therefore be seen as a foundation for the art he was to practise later. The paintings can be arranged in the order desired.

The 10 paintings are presumably the last the artist created. Shortly after completion of the paintings he wrote a manifesto in collaboration with his professor at the time at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, Peter Bonde, where in an official letter Bonde wrote that he recommended strongly that Danh Vo should quit painting.

The artist has among other things won prestigious prizes such as the Hugo Boss Prize, New York, the BlauOrange Kunstpreis der Deutschen Volksbanken and Raiffeisenbanken, Berlin, Germany and he was nominated for the Nationalgalerie Prize for Young Art, Berlin, Germany.

He has exhibited, for example, in leading international museums and galleries such as Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York, Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, Paris, Marian Goodman Gallery, New York, The Art Institute of Chicago and the National Gallery of Denmark.

In 2015 Danh Vo will for instance be exhibiting in Den Danske Pavillon at the Venice Biennale. The artist is represented in the following public collections: National Gallery of Denmark, Copenhagen, Denmark FNAC, Paris, France. MNAM/Centre Pompidou, Paris, France. Institute for Auslandsbeziehungen, Germany Israel Museum, Israel MUSEION, Bolzano, Italy Kunstmuseum Basel, Switzerland Kunsthaus Zurich, Switzerland Tate Modern, London, England Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, USA MoMA, New York, USA
