With reference to his collection, Göran Dyhlén explains:
I started collecting old fishing equipment about 35 years ago. I’ve always loved fishing, and was delighted when, as a ten-year-old, I landed an early morning pike on the jetty in Stockholm’s northern archipelago.
I used to read the fishing magazine Napp och Nytt (Hooked) from cover to cover, and when one of our relatives came to visit and showed me his American trolling spoon ‘The Murmaid’ - a mermaid with a gold tail - it marked the start of my interest in collecting spoons. However, it would take almost 30 years before I really turned my attention to collecting - with a vengeance.
I’ve devoted my free time to visiting antique dealers, flea markets and trade fairs, primarily in and around Stockholm, but also on my travels around Sweden. Over the years, I’ve built up a network of contacts among like-minded collectors. My collection has finally reached the size where it demands a great deal of space, and something has to be done.
So I’ve decided to sell of my collection of around 2,000 items. I’m doing so with mixed emotions, of course, but it feels like the right thing to do, and I just hope that the various items will bring joy to many other people. Because after all, it’s the act of collecting - tracking down fascinating objects - that drives us collectors. The moment when you find something truly special...
I’ve tried to take a generalist’s approach to my collecting, picking up objects of different types that once served as the work tools of fishermen and farmers of yesteryear. Beautifully worn, with or without owners’ marks or provenance. So this collection may well prove interesting to both collectors of rustic items and specialist collectors who focus on spoons, reels and other fishing equipment.
The collection contains items including bait tins from the 1800s, spoons from the early 1900s, old nets, weights, net needles, haul horns, floats and more.
