Greta Garbo's armchair

One of the lots for sale at the Fine Arts & Antiques auction is an armchair that once belonged to Greta Garbo, the legendary Swedish actress.

Greta Garbo's armchair

Following her brief but hugely successful career on the silver screen, the divine Greta Garbo lived an almost reclusive life in her Manhattan apartment. Her life is and will remain a mystery, with Garbo herself building up the myth of her shadowy existence from an early stage.

It was not until after her death on 15 April 1990 that the door to her private home was prised open through the legendary auction at Sotheby's on 15 November that same year. The armchair which had stood in Garbo's study until her demise was one of the 192 items sold on that occasion.

To be sold at Fine Arts & Antiques 4-6 December
Lot no 1516
Fauteuil à la Reine from The Greta Garbo Collection
