A Nepalese Inlaid Wood and Gilt Metal Shrine, in the centre the Bodhisattva of Wisdom, Manjushri, within an elaborate jewelled architectural frame in gilded metal work and various hard stones, embellished with the eight Buddhist emblems, ashtamangala, crowned by a Garuda with dragons and a Kirtimuka at the bottom. The wooden shrine with two painted standing Bodhisattvas and the mantra om mani padme hum in golden Lantza-letters. The shrine has a final decoration in the form of a mirror. At the back paintings with a lama in a red dress and hat, holding a vajra and a book with the text om mani padme hum written in Tibetan letters. In front of the lama a table with different ritual objects. In the sky, garlands with jewels and a red impression of a seal, late 19th century, the wooden frame possibly later addition. height c. 69 cm, wear
PROVENANCE:
From the Collection of the Krook Family
The lawyer Sten Krook (1920-2009) and his mother Xenia Krook (1892-1988) shared a common interest in travelling and collecting Asian bronze figures. They conducted several journeys together to China, India, Nepal, Hong Kong and Thailand, during 1930-80's. The collection is an interesting mixture of religious figures from 15th to 20th centuries, from China, Tibet, Nepal, India and Japan.
