The harbour in Mölle by Kullen, Sweden

Signed or inscribed "Richardt. Mollebye v. Kullen", in ink on the reverse

This Danish "Golden Age" picture was probably painted in the late 1830s- early 1840s, when Richardt studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Art. Mölle, a former fishing village, situated on the peninsular "Kullen" in Scania in South of Sweden across the straight that separates Denmark and Sweden.

Richardt is most famous for his depictions of the Niagara Falls, the first of which he painted during a stay in the United States between 1855-59. So famous are his depictions of this subject that his 1856 painting Niagara Falls was chosen to be the backdrop for the customary luncheon following the Second inauguration of Barack Obama in Statuary Hall, New York. Senator Charles Schumer, the Chair of the Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies, stated why he chose the painting: "For me as a New Yorker, Niagara Falls never fails to inspire a tremendous awe for the natural beauty of our great country. Then and now, the mighty falls symbolize the grandeur, power and possibility of America.".

Richardt visited Sweden on several occassions. In 1852-53 he published Scanian manors (Skånska herregårdar), 78 litographs based on his original drawings, and between 1864-69, Manors in Södermanland (Herregårdar uti Södermanland), comprising 57 litographs. These works were very popular at the time. Today, they are of great historical interest.

In 1873, Richardt with his family moved to the United States. They lived first in the town of Niagara Falls, N. Y. where the artist again produced canvases depicting the great waterfall and the surrounding area, in 1875 to San Francisco, and finally in 1876 to Oakland. He exhibited and sold his works in San Francisco until at least 1887. Today, his paintings are held and exhibited by museums and other public institutions in the United States and Denmark, two hang in The White House, Washington, D.C.. (For further reading see P. D.
