EXPERTISE
Ivan Samarine, London
Lev Chistovsky was the son of revolutionaries who happened to be exiled to Pskov at the time of his birth. He attended the Imperial Academy in St. Petersburg, and also studied under the classical portrait painter Alfred Eberling - who painted both Nicholas II and Stalin in his career. In 1924 he left Russia for Rome, where he met his wife and lifelong companion Irina Khlestova. After two years they moved on to Paris, and it was in France that Tchistovsky was to enjoy a successful career. He developed a reputation as a master of watercolour, and his nudes, flower paintings and portraits, executed with dazzling, precise technique were a commercial success in those classical circles in pre-war Paris who resisted modernism. In recent years he has been rediscovered, and his pictures form one of the centre pieces of the recent exhibition Neizvestnaya Rossyia, Russian Art of the First Half of the 20th century, Masterpieces from the Collection of Tatiana and Georgii Khatsenkov (Monaco, 1915). See the brilliant catalogue by Xenia Muratova, pp. 431 -457.
