A Sancai-Glazed Pottery Figure of a Ferghana Horse, standing four-square on a rectangular base with the head turned slightly to the left, the ears pricked and the mouth open, and is glazed predominantly in chestnut with a cream-colored blaze running from the poll to the muzzle and with a further large cream splash on the left shoulder. The long, naturalistic mane covered in a cream-colored glaze falls onto one side of the powerful neck and is incised with grooves to simulate the thick hair. The saddle, blanket and hoofs are unglazed. Tang Dynasty (618-906), height c. 33 cm, wear, minor damages
PROVENANCE:
Purchased 1950 from Orvar Karlbeck (1879-1967), a Swedish engineer working in China from 1906-1927,
with railroad projects. Between 1928-1934 Karlbeck returned to China to conduct three collecting
expeditions buying objects for museums and private collectors in Sweden.
Together with the original receipt, dated 26th January 1950 and original certificate note, written by Orvar Karlbeck and dated 15th December 1949.
