Karazin is best known as a military artist having served in the army himself and taken part in two campaigns in Central Asia before working as an official war artist in the Turkish campaign in Serbia, 1876­1878. A man of many interests, he was a writer, a painter, and a distinguished member of the Russian geographical society. He worked on a number of literary illustrations in the 1880s, to which the present group of works can be counted.
