Beskrivning

A Unique Chinese Blue Speckled White Opaque Glass Bowl, with a short straight foot and everted rim, the white glass finely speckled overall with intense cobalt blue splashes, probably executed in the imperial palace workshop, 18th century, diameter c. 15, height c. 7 cm

PROVENANCE:
According to family records the bowl was purchased c. 1760, by the Swedish captain Jöns Petterson Hockberg (1705-1780) born in Karlshamn, Blekinge. The bowl has been inherited to the eldest daughter for seven generations.

NOTE:
In the Qing dynasty, under Emperor Kangxi (1662-1722), a glasshouse was set up in 1696 within the Imperial Workshop in the Forbidden City in Beijing. This greatly increased the status of glass and resulted in a flourishing of glass production.

Glass with fragments of other colours rolled into the surface during production were a standard type at the Imperial glassworks at Beijing, providing an endless variety of colour combinations. Glass of different colours was ground into fragments, layed on the marvering board, and then picked up in a gather of molten glass and rolled into the surface. Placed back in the furnace, the fragments would melt into the surface, before it was blown into shape.
