A Japanese Carved and Gilded Wooden ´Happi Benzaiten´ in a Travelling Shrine ´Zushi´, the exterior in dark lacquer with bronze mounts decorated with scrolling tendrils, opening to gilt lacquer interior with a separately carved wooden Bodhisattva seated on a gilt lotus pedestal, wearing garlands of metal and holding attributes, accompanied by two protective martial deities, 19th century, height of the shrine c. 25 cm, wear, loss of colour, details and material

NOTE:
Happi Benzaiten is a weapon-wielding warrior goddess. The form was first introduced in Japan during 8th century. Happi literally means "eight arms". These arms hold martial implements, symbolizing Benzaiten´s role as defender of Buddhism and protector of the state.
