The Narva Gates were built to commemorate the victory over Napoleon in 1812, originally in wood
after a design by Quarenghi, and then renovated in stone by Stasov and opened in 1834. It was positioned on
the Narva road in order to greet the Russian troops returning from Europe. Badly damaged during World War II, it was renovated in 1951.
