Mikhail Tkachenko was an outstanding Ukrainian painter, and a bright representative of the Kharkov landscape school. Born in Kharkov, in 1880 - 1888 he studied at the Imperial Academy in Saint Petersburg, whence he graduated with the rank of class artist of the 1st degree and the right to a pensioner',s travel abroad.
In 1888 Mikhail Tkachenko settled in Paris, returning to the Ukraine every year to paint. In 1888 - 1892 he studied at the Academy of F. Cormon and became a member of the Russian Club of Artists, where he befriended A. Bogolyubov and N. Gritsenko. Under their influence Mikhail Tkachenko became interested in marine painting. He became a permanent exponent at the Paris Salon, where his paintings were repeatedly awarded with medals. Solo exhibitions took place in Paris (1898, 1906, 1909), and he participated in the World Exhibition in Paris (1900, Second Gold Medal), the International Exhibition in Liege (1905, Gold Medal) and many others. In 1902 Mikhail Tkachenko was appointed to the position of Chief Artist of the Maritime Department of the Russian Empire. His paintings are held by all the major Russian museums.
