PROVENANCE
The grandchildren of the sitter

The portrait is of Maya Degutniks, the grandmother of the present owners, who was born in St. Petersburg in 1896 and who left Russia just before the revolution to settle in Sweden.

It has sadly been impossible to come up with a firm attribution for this remarkable portrait, which has been in the possession of the sitter´s family since it was created just before the Russian revolution. It is clearly a work of great quality painted either by a member of the World Art in St.Petersburg, or one closely associated to the movement. Amongst artists that have been tentatively suggested are Serebriakova, Brodsky and Golovin.
