Beskrivning

A Chinese-Export Gilt Lacquer Six-Fold Screen, the front painted with a scene of figures in a landscape with temples and mountains within a stylised foliage border, the reverse with flowering prunus, peaches, pomegranates and bamboo plants in gold on a black ground, late Qing dynasty, late 19th century, each leaf c. 200 x 56 cm, cracks, loss of lacquer, wear

PROVENANCE:
The Royal Palace in Stockholm. The Swedish King Gustav V (1858-1950) was skilled at embroidery. After a stomach ulcer operation, a doctor ordered the King to stay calm by doing needlework. He relaxed by embroidering flame stitch, often behind this fold screen, to avoid distractions.
Hence by descent to the present owner.
