A Gilt and Lacquered Wood Figure of Marici, the figure is seated in dhyanasana, her principal hands in anjali mudra, clothed in flowing garments and cape, setting off a jeweled chest, heavily lobed pendant ears enclosing a serene face with downcast eyes, the hair sculpted in a neat top knot with cascading plaits, the back of the head decorated with two faces, the left one is a sow´s head with a protruding snout, the right one is a ferocious wrathful deity, all covered with a rich gilt lacquer, small rolls of paper with religious texts are placed in a hollow compartment under the base of this sculpture, Ming dynasty (1368-1644), height c. 24 cm, loss of arms and crown, wear, cracks, damaged

From a Swedish private collection, purchased in Stockholm during the late 1970's
NOTE:
Marici is a bodhisattva associated with light and the sun. In China she is worshiped as both a Buddhist and Daoist deity. She is highly revered in Esoteric Buddhism.
