NOTE:
Kongosho is the Japanese word for a vajra (Sanskrit), which is a physical representation of the thunderbolt and believed to embody incisive powers with the potential to dispel hindrances to enlightenment. The kongosho is one of the ritual objects (hogu) used in esoteric Buddhism by the Shingon and Tendai sects in Japan. Esoteric Buddhism was introduced to Japan by two monks, Kukai and Saicho, in the Heian period (794-1185). Unlike orthodox Buddhism, the new sects used the hogu implements, which were considered indispensable for ritual ceremonies because of the mystic powers they were believed to embody. Many were thought to derive from ancient Indian weapons.
