TEXT ENG.
"Already early in hos career Oscar Bergman was a highly respected artist amongst his colleagues and patrons. The banker Ernest Thiel, the founder of The Thielska Gallery, Stockholm, owned as many as 42 of his work executed between 1904-1918 and the industrialist Carl Fredrik Liljevalch (1837-1909), the founder of the museum Liljevalchs also purchased several of his works.
Between 1902-04 Bergman lived at an artists home known as Neglinge, in Saltsjöbaden in the inner archipelago outside Stockholm. which had been provided by Ernest Thiel. It housed some 20 artists and writers, amongst them Hjalmar Söderberg, Karl Isaksson and Gerard Henning. Bergman´s mother worked as a chef in the kitchen.
At the turn of 1904-05 Bergman went to Italy to study for the symbolist painter Armand Points i Florenz. Point had seen Bergman´s work during a visit to Thiel in Stockholm during the autumn and had persuaded him to allow Bergman to study at his school at the bankers expense.
During the autumn 1905, Bergman participated in his first exhibition at Konstnärshuset in Stockholm together with Ivar Arosenius and Gerard Henning. The following year he had his first separate exhibition at Hallins konsthandel on Drottninggatan in Stockholm, the art dealer renown also for having staged the first exhibition of Strindberg´s work.
The present picture was at one stage in the possession of the artist Per (Pelle) Adolf Swedlund. Between 1932-1946, he was the Director of the Thielska Gallery. The picture was in his possession already by 1916, when it was lent to the retrospective exhibition of Bergman´s work. This suggests that it was acquired by Swedlund already in 1906."
