A RARE BLUE AND WHITE JAR, painted in strong blue tones with the ´Three Friends of Winter´, pine, prunus and bamboo, their branches growing in the form of auspcious characters, ruyi-head borders encircling the shoulder and a petal-lappet border below, Jiajing six-character mark and of the period (1522-1566), height c. 15.5 cm

PROVENANCE:
From the collection of the Nobel prize winner in Physics, Gustaf Dahlén (1869-1937). Inherited to the current owner.


NOTE:
The decoration on this jar, pine, prunus and bamboo are known as the ´The Three Friends of Winter´. They are regarded as ´three friends´ because they flourish and do not wither, they would always ´accompany each other´ during the cold winter season unlike other plants. Together they symbolize steadfastness, perseverance and resilience, which is highly regarded in Confucian teachings as the scholar-gentleman´s ideal.
