Preparatory for an illustration to a poem by Olof Thunman (Uppsala 1879-1944 Noor, Knivsta socken) entitled King Od. Ballad, first published in "Upsala Nya Tidnings Julnummer" [Upsala New Newspaper Christmas edition], in 1925. The poem was also published in Thunman´s "Olandssånger. Dikter "(Songs from Oland. Poems), in 1927. In the final illustration, Thunman has included a pack of wolves chasing the riding party.
Thunman´s historical balads relating to the Viking Age are unique in the history of Swedish lyrics and are based on a profound knowledge of historical facts as well as verbal tradition in the form of folktales. King Od, the subject of the present drawing, was in fact not a king but a God in Nordic Mythology. He was married to the Goddess Freyja with whom he had two daughters. When Od went on long travels, Freyja is reputed to have shed tears of red gold. Thunman most certainly was aware of the origin of Od, for at the end of the balad he refers to him as a God, stating that he sometimes changed his name when he was amongst humans. He also states that he was one-eyed, a clear reference to a viking warrior. One of Sweden´s oldest churches, Ods Church, in the province of Västergötland, dating from the beginning of the 12th Century, may have received its name from him. It is also interesting to note that Thunman for a period of his life lived in this province. The name Od shows clear affinity with Oden, the famous God, although the connection remains unsolved. In the balad Thunman mentions that King Od was hunting by horseback in a forest known by the name "Oland´s forest". Oland is an ancient name of a district in the north of Uppland, the province in which Thunman was born and where he spent most of his life. The name originates from the word "oländig", meaning rugged, which refers to its recondite forestland covered with boulders from the ice age. Oland is one of the oldest named districts in Uppland. Oland was part of the medieval Tiundaland, one of the Folklands. During the Viking Age it probably extended from the coast of the Baltic Sea to the bay which today is the Lake Mälaren. According to Snorri Sturluson in the Heimskringla Tiundaland was the richest and most fertile region of Sweden where was the seat of the Swedish Viking kings at Upsala and the Swedish Archbishopric. All the Swedish law makers were subordinate to the one of Tiundaland. Upsala öd was the Norse name given to the collection of estates which was the property of the Swedish Crown in medieval Sweden. Its purpose was to finance the Swedish king, originally the "king of Uppsala". Its origins are prehistoric and unknown, but according to a tradition it originated as a donation given by the god Freyr to the Temple at Uppsala which he founded. Its name may well have its origin in King Od. Since 1296 Tiundaland formed part of the modern province of Uppland. During the 15th to 18th centuries Oland became one of the centres of Swedish industrial life with the establishment of mining and iron foundries by the Walloons.
Olof Thunman was a member of a group of artists called Konstnärslaget (The League of Artists), formed in Uppsala in 1905, counting John Bauer, Arthur Sjögren and Gusten Widerbäck amongst its members. Olof Thunman was not only active as an artist and writer but also as a songwriter. Perhaps his most famous song is "Vi gå över daggstänkta berg", from 1900. Every single word he writes is based on historical facts. His depictions of paganism are mostly based on the history of Uppland and its folk tradition).
