.
Victor Vasarely explored the relationship between pure colour and pure shape, and is now considered a pioneer and leading exponent of optical art:op-art.This is a genre of abstract art that uses colour effects and vibrating patterns to give the observer a sense of movement through optical illusion. The term was coined in 1964 by Time Magazine, but the ideas behind it can be traced back to the constructivist practices of Bauhaus.
.
Vasarely developed a rational approach with hisAlphabet Plastique,a system of squares comprising predefined modules of form and colour. Every painting was based on 15 fundamental shapes, created from the circle, square and triangle. Variations on this basic system were developed by applying different colour spectra consisting of 20 shades. His system allowed the creation of endless combinations, and Vasarely considered it a universal visual language. His intention was to disseminate fundamental human values to the general public beyond the boundaries of the art establishment.
.
He made his international breakthrough at the group exhibitionThe Responsive Eyeheld at MOMA in New York in 1965. Just a few years after the concept of op-art had been established, it became clear that Vasarely´s work entitledZebrafrom the 1930s was one of the earliest examples of art featuring optical qualities.
.
Vasarely developed his ´Plastic Alphabet´ over the years, and it was during the 1960s and 1970s that he created some of his most advanced works. These paintings are based on spherical deformations within a polychrome pattern of squares. The surface seems to bend either inwards or outwards, generating a sense of striving to expand or withdraw back into the depths of the painting.
