A Benefit painting for Star for Life Foundation
Elephant dung, earth from Thanda Safari Lodge, acrylic binder, canvas, resin on canvas, 188 x 178 x 10 cm.
In his wide-ranging practice, Bangkok-raised artist Korakrit Arunanondchai puts a premium on collaboration - whether it´s photographing fellow downtown characters or combining music, video and performance. Arunanondchai discovered art in high school when he saw Olafur Eliasson´s Sun on a visit to London, soon after he moved to the U.S. to attend Rhode Island School of Design and Columbia, where he studied under Rirkrit Tiravanija. Along with his blends of pop culture and music - he had a close call with rock stardom in his native Thailand - Arunanondchai cites a range of artistic references, from a remix of Hieronymous Bosch´s Garden of Earthly Delights and a feature film featuring Robert Smithson´s Spiral Jetty to a series of paintings based on an act from Thailand´s Got Talent.
He earned his BFA from the RISD in 2009 and his MFA from Columbia University in 2012. He has had several solo exhibitions at CLEARING gallery in New York and Brussels, at Carlos/Ishikawa in London and has been featured in major group exhibitions at the Sculpture Center and the Fisher Landau Center. Additionally, the artist previewed his upcoming film Painting with history in a room filled with men with funny names 2, at MoMA PS1´s event during Art Basel Miami Beach in December 2013.
In 2014 he had a major personal exhibition at the MoMA in New York and in 2015 at the invitation of The Absolut Company the artist took over the "Point Perché" platform in the heart of Palais de Tokyo in Paris. This year he exhibited among other at KIASMA in Helsinki.
The painting is sold for the benefit of the non-profit organisation Star for Life with the mission to inspire young peolpe to believe in their dreams for the future and support them to live an AIDS-free life. The organisation now operate in over one hundred schools in southern Africa. www.starforlife.org.
