Sonia Delaunay, born and raised in Russia, made Paris her home just in time for European modern art to find a new meaningful subject matter independent of realistic depictions of the world. Alongside her husband Robert Delaunay, she founded Orphism, a movement known for its vibrant colours and gemetrical, abstract shapes. Throughout her career, Delaunay extended the visual exploration of this theory to a range of fields beyond painting, becoming a successful textile designer. In 1964 she became the only woman to have had an exhibition at the Louvre Museum in her own lifetime.
The gouache Lettre S was created at the end of Delaunay's long career. A few years earlier, she had met the poet and author Jacques Damase, who later became her partner. In a series of paintings she explored the power of colour and the inherent rhythm in their combination on the canvas. Lettre S incorporates Delaunay's love of light, shapes and colour, creating a sense of depth and movement that is consistent throughout her oeuvre.
