Louis Auguste le Tonnelier de Breteuil (1730-1807), French aristocrat, diplomat, statesman and politican. He was sent to Sweden by de Choiseul to help the sitting government ("hattarna") and secure the French influence in Sweden. In 1764 he received new orders, to work for strengthening the royal power in Sweden. In time the other "party" ("mössorna") gained power, in spite of the great financial help France gave to "hattarna". De Choiseul now declared that a "coup d'etat" to strengthen royal power was the only way to secure French influence, which Breteuil could not support, so he was called home. He worked after that in Holland, Napoli and Vienna. 1783-1787 he held the place as minister of the Royal houses. As a royalist he emigrated during the revolution and worked for the King, but after the execution of Marie Antoinette he withdrew in privacy, and returned at last to France in 1802.
He also cooperated with count Axel von Fersen in organizing the escape from Paris of the French royal family.
