BAUHIN, CASPAR. Small 4:o (232x176 mm.). (24), 1-518, (22, last blank) pp. Title printed in red and black (some foxing).
Contemporary brown half calf, somewhat worn, spine in six compartments, some damage at head, speckled edges. Partly foxed. Signatures on title ofGeorgius Giädda (partly overwritten), Carl G. Tessin (his library signum "nya Biblioth" on first endpaper), Ol. Broman, on inside of upper cover And. Jah. Retzius.

Bauhin catalogues in this second edition (first published in 1623) about 6000 species, establishing a system which Printing and the Mind of Men calls "a most important scientific advance", using a nomenclature later adopted by Linnaeus.
Carl Gustaf Tessin (1695-1770), Swedish politician and a person of outstanding culture, son of architect Nicodemus Tessin the younger. In the catalogue by Linnaeus "Museum Tessinianum" (printed in 1753) the collection of minerals and petrifications which Tessin had collected at his castle Åkerö are listed. He also had a large library.
Anders Jahan Retzius (1742-1821), natutalist (apothecary, chemist, zoologist, botanist, geologist), profesor in Lund, pupil of Linné. Among his own pupils is Anders Retzius, C. A. Agardh, Elias Fries, and Sven Nilsson.
Provenance: Collecta Friesia. Elias Fries (1794-1878), famous Swedish mycologist and botanist. His most important work was "Systema mycologicum" published in 1821-32, Thore M. Fries (1832-1913), Robert Fries (1876-1966), Magnus Fries (1917-1987), Robert Fries (b. 1952).
