Small 4:o (229x173 mm.). (19), 1-96, (8, last blank, including dedication to Hatton. Title with large engraved vignette (Sheldonian theatre), 52 engravings of plants in text numbered 1-52.
Contemporary black calf, slightly worn, gilt borders on covers, richly gilt spine in 5 compartments, small damage at head, speckled edges. Later inner doublures and endpapers.
Pritzel 859, Nissen: BBI 179. First edition. The dedication to Hatton bound at end. A few copies of this edition also contain an additional leaf (not present here) bearing a dedication to the Royal Society signed by Boccone.
Paolo Boccone (later Silvio, 1633-1704) was botanist of the Grand-Duke of Tuscany and professor of botany in Padua. He traveled in in Western Europe, and collected rare plant specimens in Italy, Sicilly, and Corsica.
