RUGENDAS, CHRISTIAN and GEORGE PHILIPP. "Recueil de divers piece gravés par Mr. Rugedas Augsbourg" (manuscript title on first leaf). Collection of 69 mezzotint engravings by Christian Rugendas after Georg Philipp Rugendas. No place, no date (Augsburg about 1745).
Oblong folio (330x480 mm). Manuscript title and 69 plates all mounted on thick paper (images with various sizes, mostly 130x180 -150x180 mm, some spotted).
Contemporary half calf over vellum, partly worn and rubbed, boards soiled, gilt spine with raised bands and compartments, dark morocco lettering title label, foot of spine damaged, hinges worn and starting. Engraved bookplate of Charles Chauncy. Old bookseller´s cut in French on front free endpaper, antiquarian labels from L´Amateur, Buenos Aires and C.E. Rappaport, Rome.
Christian Rugendas (1708-1781), was an artist, mezzotint engraver and the son of Georg Philipp Rugendas who was one of the most famous painters of battle scenes of the 18th century. The prints represent horsemen, soldiers, military and battle scenes, costumes, landscapes etc.
Provenance Charles Chauncy. M.D. (1706-1777), physician, antiquary, Fellow of the Royal Society and collector.
