The first work: This corpus of theological writings to which the Monophysites appealed at a colloquy at Constantinople in 533 has been attributed to Dionysius Areopagita, an Athenian mentioned in Acts XVII. 34 as converted ar Athen by St. Paul's preaching. Though this attribution was rejected by Hypatius, Bishop of Ephesus (c. 520-540), it was normally accepted until, and even after, the 16th century. The texts are believed to have been composed in about 1500, probably in Syria.
The supposed apostolic authority of these theological writings, added to their intrinsic value, caused the "Pseudo-Dionysius" to exercise a profound influence of medieval theology both in the East and in the West. His extant writings are included in the present volume, translated from the Greek by Ambrosius Traversarius, with notes by Jacques Lefèvre d'Etaples and a preface by the editor. The volume also contains letters by Ignatius Antiochenus and Polycarpus Smyrnaeus.
The Pseudo-Dionysian writings aim at achieveing a synthesis between Christian dogma and Neoplatonist thought. Their leading idea, which has made them the charter of Christian mysticism, is the intimate union between Good and the soul, and the progressive deification of man. (The Oxford Dictionary of the Christian Church, pp. 406-407).
The second work: Includes his most important work "De fide orthodoxa", translated from the Greek by Jacques Le Fèvre d'Etaples.
Johannes Damascenus exercised a considerable influence on later theology. All through the Middle Ages his works were used by the Greeks and especialyy the Slavs. (The Oxford Dictionary of the Christian Church, pp. 748-49).
