WITH FINE FLOWER PLATES. EDWARDS, JOHN. The British Herbal, containing one hundred plates of the most beautiful and scarce flowers and useful medicinal plants which blow in the open air of Great Britain... London (printed for the author, to be sold by J. Edmondson and J. Walter) [1769-]1770.
Folio (453x275 mm). 100 hand-coloured engraved plates, most drawn and engraved by Edwards, some engraved by J. Fougeron and W. Darling (complete, slight offsetting to text, some minor foxing and soiling, some occasional minor paper loss to margin, title with some browning, tear to inner margin, text with some foxing, a few short repaired tears to text leaves, index leaf with tear to inner margin, slightly creased) .
Contemporary mottled calf, spine gilt with raised bands, partly rubbed and worn, especially to corners and spine, joints with old split and some repairs, spine chipped at head and foot, corners bumped, later endpapers).

John Edwards (1742- c. 1815), English botanist, painter, illustrator. His famous work The British Herbal was published monthly between 1769 and 1770 covering exotic and British flowers. "A fine work with many beautiful plates" (Dunthorne).
