Folio (293x233 mm). Engraved portrait of George Edwards by J.S. Miller after B. Dandridge, engraved vignette on half title, 152 fine hand-coloured copper-engraved plates by and after George Edwards (complete, some slight offsetting to text, some plates numbered by hand, some minor foxing, also to text). English and French parallel explanatory text in double-column.
Contemporary panelled full calf, partly rubbed and worn on spines and edges, some inner joints partly split or starting, vol. III with upper part of spine with some damage, vol. 3 slightly different and smaller. Bookplates. 3 volumes.

The plates show different kinds of birds, decorated with plants, butterflies and beetles. There are also plates showing monkeys, fish, zebras, elephant etc. The Gleanings, often found with Edwards' A Natural History of Uncommon Birds, is "one of the most important of all Bird Books, both as a Fine Bird Book and as a work of Ornithology. It is still high on each list" (Fine Bird Books).
