FAMOUS MAP OF THE AZORES. LINSCHOTEN, JAN HUYGEN VAN. A Cidade De Angra Na Ilha De Iesu Xpo Da Tercera... Amsterdam, 1595.
Hand-coloured engraved map, a fine bird's eye view, consists of two sheets joined together, showing several ships, fine figurative cartouches with the Portugese and Azorean coats of arms and title and dedication cartouoches. About 480x840 mm. Repaired tear (about 12 cms) to the left side which has become somewhat brown, map cut close and with restored margins, some folds.
The island of Tercera with the largest town Anra was an interesting port and important stop for ships going to the Americas and Far East in the 16th and 17th centuries.
The plate was engraved by Baptist van Doetechum and is from Linschoten's "Itinerario", which was a manual for sailing to the East Indies, based on Linschoten's own experiences and secret Portuguese guides. He was partly forced to spent two years in the Azorean archipelago on his way back from India to Holland, as he lost his ship in a storm.
A reduced smaller version was also published by de Bry in Frankfurt 1601.
