This history of central Eurasia is the first scientific study of the Mongols based on Islamic and Chinese sources.
Joseph de Guignes (1721.-1800) studied under Étienne Fourmont, became translator of Chinese to the French king in 1741 and succeded Fourmont as secretary-translator for oriental languages at the Bibliothèque du Roi in 1745.
