INDIA. V(EYSSIÈRE DE) LA CROZE, (MATHURIN). Histoire du christianisme des Indes. La Haye (chez les Freres Vaillant, & N. Prevost) 1724.
8:o. (16), (1)-570, (54) pp. Engraved frontispiece, title printed in red and black with engraved vignette, 1 folding engraved map, 3 engraved plates.
Contemporary brown full calf, slightly worn, somewhat faded richly gilt spine in six compartments, red edges.
First edition of this Indian missionary history, not only based on the works of Goueva, Geddes, Bernier, Tavernier, etc., but also on the mss. of Ziegenbalg, whose Danish mission is described on pp. 536-566.
The author "questions the logic of corrupt Portuguese authority over good Indians, religion is merely a pretext for European domination, it would be more appropriate for the Indian subjects to give religious instruction to their European rulers" (Kate Teltscher).
