Baron Ferdinand von Richthofen (1833-1905), famous German geographer, geologist and traveller. His journeys in China and Japan between 1868-72 resulted in this work. He was appointed professor in Leipzig, Bonn and Berlin. Among others, he had the swedish explorer Sven Hedin as a student. Manfred von Richthofen, the flying ace "the Red Baron" during World War I, was his nephew.
The work, "China. Ergebnisse eigener Reisen und darauf begründeter Studien", consits of 5 text volumes and 2 atlases, published 1877-85, three posthumous volymes appeared in1911 and 1912 (the second atlas). The work is extremely hard to find complete, they are almost always sold seperately at the market. It is considered to be the first scientific atlas about China, and for a long period the only work of reference avaliable.
