THE HERBARIUM OF GEORGE CLIFFORD. LINNÉ, CARL VON. Hortus Cliffortianus plantas exhibens... in hortis ...Hartecampi in Hollandia coluit ... Georgius Clifford... Amsterdam 1737 (i.e., 1738).

Folio (420x250 mm). Half-title, engraved allegorical frontispiece of the Hortus Cliffortianus (dated 1738) by and after Jan Wandelaar, title printed in red and black, engraved title vignette, Wandelaar's 1 page explanation of the frontispiece, Linnaeus' dedications to George Clifford and to the "botanical reader," the dedications dated from Hartekamp, 30 July 1737. 36 engraved plates, 28 by Wandelaar, of which 20 after G. D. Ehret. Half-title and last index-leaf reinforced, title and half-title with some spotting, some minor staining and foxing, dampstain at the end slightly affecting last plate, 1 leaf partly loose.
19th-century red half calf, lower cover slightly loose, gilt spine in compartments and with gilt title, marbled edges. Bookplate of Gustaf Drake (af Hagelsrum).

"First edition of Linnaeus' first detailed catalogue of cultivated plants, printed at the expense of the wealthy Anglo-Dutch banker George Clifford (1685-1760) in a very limited number of copies for presentation purposes. Only a few copies were for sale. With this work Linnaeus introduced "species" and variety" under genus concept in descriping plants for the first time in the history of botany. He also created new genera and added synonyma to about 2500 plants". (A catalogue of the works of Linnaeus, Sanbergs bokhandel, no 12, 1957). Wandelaar's engravings, most after designs by Georg Dionysius Ehret. Pages 232-300 (gatherings Nnn2-Ffff2) are omitted as issued.
The Herbarium of George Clifford was later puchased by Sir Joseph Banks and is now in the British Museum.

Provenance: Gustaf Drake af Hagelsrum (1877-1939), Swedish pharmacist and author of a reference work on the scientific dissertations by Linnaeus published 1939.
Lars Bergquist (born 1930), Swedish author and diplomat.
