8vo (166x104 mm). (16), 309 pp. Lacking 3 pages at the end. 4 folding engraved plates and 19 engravings by J. Troy (lacking 1 folding plate, some minor foxing).
Contemporary calf binding, slightly worn, richly gilt spine with title label, small damage at upper edge, red speckled edges. First free endpaper loose and with some notes. 1 page with small burnhole with loss of pagination, 1 page with small loss of corner, text with some spotting, signature on half title. Bookplate of Arpad Plesch.
Nissen 1256n, Pritzel 5739. Enlarged second edition, the first was published in 1676 and another edition in 1697. Of plants in the Montpellier region.
Pierre Magnol (1638-1715), French botanist whose major work Prodromus historiae generalis plantarum (1689) made a large contribution to science as he grouped plants into families. In 1703 Charles Plumier named the tree Magnolia after him.
Árpád Plesch (1889-1974), Hungarian banker and lawyer who owned a famous collection of rare botanical drawings and books and precious esoteric pornography. His collection of books on botany was included in the book of Douglas Cooper, Great Private Collections. The collection was sold at Sotheby´s in 1975-1976.
