Contemporarybrown cloth, very slightly worn, somewhat faded spine with redspine label. Some foxing. Old signatute on first endpaper. Bookple of William Branston.

Ljungstedt's "An historical sketch" was published by James Munroe & Co. in Boston, but was in fact printed at Macao with exception of a few pages and the illustrations.
An account is given of the history of Macao and Canton and the rules applying to foreign merchants in their dealings with the Chinese.
Provenance: William Branston, who had been employed at Her Majesty's Superintendent's Office at Canton and who published a prospectus for a map and view of the city, harbour, and forts of Macao, an a plan of the city Of Canton and its suburbs (?never published).
