4to (27x22 cm). 3 folding engraved maps (some foxing), 52 mostly folding and handcoloured engraved plates (all, some foxing and minor staining, mainly marginal, a few with dampstaining to margin, text partly with offsetting from plates), 28 mainly handcoloured engraved vignettes.
Green full calf bindings bound by Jokinen, gilt borders, richly gilt spines in compartments with red and orange labels, marbled edges. Minor foxing, some soiling to title in vol. II. Bookplates of Tove Olsoni Nilsson, Kristofer and Martin Enckell. 2 volumes.
Pallas was one of the savants chosen by the St, Petersburg Academy to carry on the work of examining the resources of the far distant parts of the Russian Empire. He left St. Petersburg in 1768 and spent full six years in investigating various districts of Sib eria...His reports on the geology, fauna and flora are of great scientific value."
