Folio. With 824 partly folding engraved plates, of which 127 handcoloured, 4 folding tables, 2 maps (416 plates in first series, 408 in the second series, some plates with tears, some spotting, minor worming).
11 volumes in contemporary brown full calf bindings, worn and partly with damages, split joints, partly loose covers, gilt spines with titles "Linnean transactions", some worming, 1 volume bound upside down, 4 volumes (1879-80) in blue half calf, partly worn, gilt spines. The later volumes with stamp "Sold by Quekett Microscopical club" on flyleaves and gilt stamped on spines. 16 vols.
Includes writings and illustrations on insects, plants, birds, animals, geologi, lichens etc. The Linnean Society was founded by amongst others Sir Josehph Banks and James Edward Smith in 1788 and is housed in Burlington house in London. In 1783 Smith purchased Carl von Linné's botanical and zoological collections.
