Contemporary brown half calf, somewhat worn, gilt spine in six compartments, starting to crack in upper joint, small damages at head and foot, speckled edges. Corners of first and last two leaves browned due to acidity of binder's glue. Bookplate.

First edition of a statement of political theory which had significant contemporary repercussions. It is a vindication of royal power against the regional judicial tribunals known as "parlements". The book was forbidden and burned in France. Voltaire has the distinction of being the most suppressed author of the 18th century.
