Contemporary brown half calf, worn, slightly faded gilt spine with mended crack, some damages at head, red edges. Pp. 191-200 with large brownspot in lower margin. Some old marginal annotations or annotations in text. Old annotations on first endpaper. Signature on title Edv. Weigel, on inside of upper cover J E Areschoug and Rob. E. Fries.

Johan Erhard Areschoug (1811- 1887, Swedish botanist and algeologist. In 1859 he succeeded Elias Magnus Fries (1794-1878) as professor of botany at the University of Uppsala, a position he maintained until 1876. In 1851, he was elected a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.
Areschoug performed extensive field studies of Scandinavian cryptogams, being remembered for his work in the field of phycology. The red algae genus Areschougia from the family Areschougiaceae is named in his honor. (Wikipedia).
Provenance: Collecta Friesia. Elias Fries (1794-1878), famous Swedish mycologist and botanist. His most important work was "Systema mycologicum" published in 1821-32, Thore M. Fries (1832-1913), Robert Fries (1876-1966), Magnus Fries (1917-1987), Robert Fries (b. 1952).
