Presentation copy with the half title inscribed "From the Author" in ink by a Murray's clerk. To the top of the half title in ink "William C. Marshall". Mounted on endpaper a 2-page letter on 2 leaves in 8:o written and signed Ch. Darwin Sept. 7 no year (probably 1876) to Marshall, the first leaf with printed head "Down, Beckenham, Kent".
Contemporary brown full calf, worn, gilt border, gilt edges of covers, mended in the hinges, rebacked with old gilt spine (some damages) mounted, marbled edges.
First edition, first issue.
William C.(ecil) Marshall (born 1849), architect, designed additonal rooms for Down House in 1876.
Insectivorous plant = plant that can capture and digest live prey (normally insects), to obtain nitrogen compounds that are lacking in its usual marshy habitat. The book has been in the ownership of a northern Swedish family and according to the owner's catalogue-text, the item was bought at our house 6-9 September 1971, lot no 6395.
