Publisher's original dark green cloth, slightly worn, blind-stamped borders, some bumping to corners of covers, spine lettered in gilt, cracks in inner joints. Uncut, partly unopened. Some foxing. Bookplate of Johannes Bring.

First edition, second issue. Darwin's only photographically illustrated work. "With this book Darwin founded the study of ethology (animal behavior) and conveyance of information (communication theory) and made a major contribution to psychology". (DSB).
Page 208 with wrongly spelling "htatt". At end 4 pages advertisment from John Murray, dated November 1872.
The Swedish-born photographer Rejlander acting himself and members of his family in several of the pictures. The other image and twenty-one wood-engravings in the text by Dr. Duchenne de Boulogne, Herr Kindermann and Dr. Wallich. This was the first highly successeful use of the collotype process of Ernest Edwards. Editions in French and America were issued, all of which have illustrations printed with local variants of the collotype process. The London edition has the most successful reproduction.
