ANATOMICAL 'FLAP' BOOK. REMMELIN, JOHANN (1583-1632). Kleiner Welt Spiegel, das ist, Abbildung goettlicher Schöpffung an dess Menschen Leib.... Ulm (J. Schultes) 1661.
Folio (c. 460x330 mm). 22 pp. Title within large engraved border (with library blindstamp, on verso duplicate stamp, some spotting and soiling, a fold in the middle, closely trimmed at top), 3 full-page engraved plates, each with multiple engraved flaps (some spotting and minor repairs, text partly spotted, small tear, some minor repairs to margin, 2 last page with reinforcements or repairs to margins, especially the last leaf) .
19th century half calf, rubbed and worn, gilt title on spine. Stamp on upper cover, The John Crerar Library (Chicago) and bookplate of the same. First endpaper loose. Ex library copy with duplicate stamp.
Second edition in German and printed in Augsburg, published by Johann Görlin. Both an art work and a medical work. All three sheets have layers of moveable flaps that show the anatomy of portions of the body from the outside to the inside. The flaps also reflect moral judgments with an image of the devil covering the top layer of flaps over the woman's genitals, and the traditional fig leaves, or something like them, covering the man's. The work was first published at Ulm in 1613 without Remmelin's name or permission, and without text. Remmelin put out the first edition with text under his authorship at Augsburg in 1619.
