MONASTIC BOOK OF HOURS, in Latin, decorated manuscript on vellum. Northern Italy, fifteenth century.
188 leaves (plus a modern paper endleaf at front), wanting leaves from most gatherings, collation: i9 (Calendar wanting 4 leaves: an endleaf plus January-March), ii4, iii3 (loose leaves bound in), iv9 (viii probably a singleton), v10, vi6 (iv and last leaf cut away), vii9 (probably wanting first leaf), viii8 (probably wanting outer bifolium), ix8, x9 (last but one leaf cut away), xi8 (v and last leaf cut away), xii9 (v cut away), xiii8 (probably wants outer bifolium), xiv10, xv9 (wants a leaf from second part), xvi6, xvii10, xxiii10, xxiv10, xxv9 (probably wants first leaf), xxvi10, xxvii8, xxviii6, single column, 13 lines in an accomplished late gothic bookhand, capitals elaborated with calligraphic hairline penstrokes, red rubrics in fine calligraphic script, initials in red or blue, larger initials in blue or liquid gold with ornate scrolling penwork in contrasting colours filling adjacent borders and terminating in coloured pinecones, instructions for rubricator surviving at foot of each Calendar leaf, some eighteenth-century devotional notes to text and twentieth-century pencil notes in German and "77" on endleaf and pastedown at front, one clumsy three-line erasure at head of 24thgathering, small worm damage to foot of first few leaves (the first skilfully repaired), slightly trimmed at edges, some small spots, else in good condition. Modern binding of limp vellum over pasteboards, in cloth covered case. Dimensions of leaves: 124x88 mm.
The volume comprises: a Calendar, the Hours of the Virgin, ending with variations for the office from Easter to Ascension, and the Office of the Dead, followed by a Litany and prayers.
