RARE WORK ON CHINA IN ROYAL BINDING OF LOUIS XIV. (BOUVET, JOACHIM). L´estat present de la Chine, en figures. Paris (chez Pierre Giffart, graveur du Roy) 1697.

Folio (about 373x240 mm.). (4, title and dedication to le duc de Bourgogne), (1)-4 (Avertissement and Idée du gouvernement de la Chine), (2, dedication to madame la duchesse de Bourgogne) pp. 42 handcoloured engraved plates by P. Giffart (of 43, 1 with tear in lower margin, some minor tears in the margins, most plates with offsetting from the following plate on verso, which partly shines through on the recto, some browning or spotting).
Contemporary red calf, gilt borders within gilt borders with the french lily in the corners, on the middle of covers the gilt armour of Louis XIV, gilt inner dentelles, gilt edges of covers, gilt spine with french lilies in seven compartments, all edges gilt, endpapers partly mended. First leaf of "Avertissement..." mended in outer lower part with loss of a few letters, some minor marginal tears, some slight dampstaining in upper part.

Joachim Bouvet (1656-1730), French Jesuit and missionary, who worked in China for the emperor Kangxi.
The plates are based on the paintings, which Bouvet carried as gifts for the French king from the emperor Kangxi. They show Chinese princes, princesses, ministers, officers, mandarin, dukes and others.
