CATHERINE II (1729-1796), EMPRESS OF RUSSIA ("CATHERINE THE GREAT"). Letter signed (LS) (´EKATERINA´), to Grigory Potemkin. Dated St. Petersburg, 24 August, 1786, in Russian (Cyrillic).
One page in folio (320x270 mm) with 10 lines on paper. The letter deals about the sum of 15.000 rubles as wages for carpenters that should be distrubuted at the Kherson Shipyard (folds, minor spot to upper and lower margin, some staining to edges).
Potemkin (1739-1791), field marshal, grand admiral, and governor-general of Russia´s southern provinces. Also known as the lover of Catherine II.
Kherson (in Ukraine) was founded by Potemkin in 1778 as a naval station, fortress, and shipbuilding center, and from there in 1783 he launched a 66-cannon battleship named ´Catherine´s Glory.´
