ATLAS. COPY OF COLONEL OSCAR MALMBORG. COLTON, G. WOOLWORTH. Colton´s General Atlas, containing One Hundred and Seventy Steel Plate Maps and Plans, on One Hundred Imperial Folio Sheets... Accompanied by Descriptions, Geographical, Statistical, and Historical by Richard S. Fisher, M.D. New York - London (J. H. Colton and Company - Trübner and Company) 1857.

Folio (440x360 mm). Title, publishers´ advertisment, list of maps, and other text to some maps. 96 mostly hand-coloured steel engraved maps and plans, including 4 double-page, sometimes with text on verso (lacking the engraved frontispiece with vignettes, otherwise complete according to list of maps, most maps with some soiling or dampstaining to margins, minor spotting and foxing, title foxed and partly dampstained, traces of erased text to upper part, text partly foxed, some dampstaining to upper margin).
With a presentation inscription written on the flyleaf during the American Civil War, "Col. Oscar Malmborg from his friend Jonas Fred Lembke (also a Civil War soldier )" dated Camp Sherman, September 14. 1863 (in Mississippi).
Publisher´s contemporary half with printed gilt title on cover and on spine, rubbed and worn, damages to spine and some on corners, partly split joints. Signature on flyleaf, endpapers browned and spotted.

Lacking the engraved frontispiece with vignettes, otherwise complete according to the map index.
Colton´s important General Atlas was published in many editions. 60 of the maps are focusing on America, some double-page (United States, New York City, Texas), and many with inset maps of cities as California with San Francisco. There are also many city plans (Boston, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Washington, Savannah/ Charleston, Louisville/New Orleans, Pittsburgh/Cincinnati, St. Louis/Chicago).

Provenance: Frans Oscar Malmborg (1820-80), born in Gotland, Sweden, and emigrated to America in 1846 and fought in the Mexican War. 1861 he was appointed lieutenant colonel in the Union army and fought in the American Civil War, amongts others under the command of General Sherman. He later published his memoirs under the title "Tjensteförteckning" and died in Sweden. His father, a captain, was a hero from the battle of Svensksund in 1790 (Sweden against Russia).
His friend was most probably captain Jonas Fred Lembke, commander of the Union artillery, who was killed in action on July 26, 1864 at Big Creek.
