DUTCH PRAYER. De Oeffening der Eeuwiger Wysheid (prayer book), in Dutch, decorated manuscript on paper. Netherlands, early sixteenth century.
189 leaves (plus 2 modern paper endleaves at front and 4 at back), wanting a few single leaves, collation: i-vii8, viii4, ix-x8, xi9 (iii cut away), xii6, xiii-xv8, xvi10 (iii and iv singletons), xvii4, xviii-xxiii8, xxiv12, single column, 20 lines of a prickly late gothic bookhand, capitals touched in red, rubrics in red, small initials in red or blue (2-line initials with scrolls within their bodies left in blank paper), larger initials in same in blue and deep red, these filled with and encased by elaborate penwork foliage touched in colour wash, the initial on the frontispiece nearly half-page in height with the penwork foliage extending down inner border and filling bas-de-page and enclosing an agnus dei, some fading to ink, small areas of water staining to top of volume, small spots, else good and presentable condition.
Limp vellum binding with yapp edges. Dimensions of leaves: 143x100mm.
